Our ConeBeam 3D dental imaging scanner is one of our latest additions to deliver faster, less invasive 3D dental images for our patients’ comprehensive assessment and treatment.
The ConeBeam CT scanner, or CBCT scanner, uses a cone-shaped radiation beam to target specific craniofacial areas closely. With CBCT, our dentist gains highly detailed 3D dental X-rays showing bone, nerve pathways, and soft tissue. This non-invasive, low-radiation tool provides a better view of a patient’s mouth, jaw, nasal passages, and throat to help our dentists better visualize potential problem areas and improve treatment assessment.
Capturing as many as 200 3D dental images in seconds, the CBCT scanner quickly merges images to create a full-spectrum 3D view of the face, throat, and jaw. The advanced cone-beam technology is a vast improvement from the X-rays of the past, which can be blurry and challenging to interpret. Our dentists can manipulate final images to get views of oral structures previously impossible to view without intraoral scanning.

There are many practical uses for CBCT 3D dental imaging technology. This type of image scanning is a critical first step in planning advanced dental treatment, including cosmetic, preventative, and restorative treatments. 3D scans are used to identify diseases of the jaw, nasal cavity, and sinuses more effectively, among other potential issues. It also assesses more complex orthodontic cases and is used to plan for crowns, dental veneers, root canals, and bone grafts.
These 3D X-rays are additionally used for post-surgery to assess treatment progress. This is especially useful for monitoring implant integration and reducing the risk of misaligned implants. Our dentists use CBCT scanning to identify unknown and persistent causes of pain or discomfort as well.

If you or your loved one requires 3D dental image scanning with the CBCT scanner, expect a painless and quick experience. Patients should remove any metals from the face before the procedure, including jewelry and glasses. You may also be asked to remove any dentures, aligners, or other dental appliances. Patients with existing crowns or fillings can receive CBCT scans without issue.
Once it’s time for your 3D dental scan, you will sit in a dental chair and wear a protective gown or covering over your chest. Your dentist will ask you to bite down on a small plastic piece to stabilize your head while two X-ray arms rotate to capture images. It’s important to stay still during this process, as movement can create blurry imaging. The scan takes approximately 20-40 seconds, is whisper quiet, and is entirely pain free.
NOTE: Patients who are pregnant or might be pregnant should make their dentists aware before submitting to CBCT scans or any other X-ray scan technology.
